Mary Shelley (2017) is a romantic period drama directed by Haifaa al-Mansour and written by Emma Jensen.The film explores the early life of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, focusing on her passionate relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the events that inspired her to write Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
The film chronicles Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin's journey as a young woman who defies societal norms by engaging in a relationship with the married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.Facing familial disapproval and societal challenges, Mary and Percy elope, accompanied by Mary's half-sister, Claire Clairmont.Their travels lead them to the home of Lord Byron at Lake Geneva, where a challenge to write a ghost story inspires Mary to conceive her seminal novel, Frankenstein.
